THE WORD OF GOD FROM GOD'S RIGHT HAND
(Verbum Supernum Prodiens)

HYMN FOR MAUNDY THURSDAY

1.         The Word of God from God’s right hand,

            The co-eternal Son,

Now before the foe He boldly stands,

            His hour is nearly come.

Betrayed by one He called His friend,

            Denied, abandoned here,

He goes to face his mortal end,

            To spill his lifeblood there.

2.        First in the signs of bread and wine,

            He gives himself as food,

His body, blood, and soul divine,

            To do poor sinners good,

All us poor sinners hath He fed,

            This sacrament of love,

And I shall eat this saving bread

            Unto the heav’ns above.

3.         When unto Bethlehem he came,

            Companion to us all,

Now unto death and earthly shame,

            Our ransom from the fall,

The Cross whereon he died, and bled,

The tomb where he was laid,

Is now our saving cup and bread,

Through which we might be saved.

4.        O bring me to that blessed land,

            Where suffering’s no more

Where Christ the victim reigns fore’er

            The victor in the war.

Raise high the banner of the King,

            Who reigns upon the Cross,

Now to Him all your off’rings bring,

All else to count as loss.

5.        O saving Victim, Christ the Lord,

            O Gate of heav’n above,

Unto the battle go ye now,

            O sacrifice of love.

All praise to God the Father be,

            Praise to His Saving Son,

Praise to the Spirit, fire unseen,

            Who bindeth all in one.
